The title Maharaj is creating some irony over Netflix. Last month, the film starring Junaid Khan was slammed by fans due to its poor quality. However, Netflix now has a gem with a similar name. Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja is now streaming on Netflix.
Released in theaters on June 14th, a film of this caliber should have had a prolonged theatrical window. However, due to the limited release, Maharaja is getting a quick OTT release.
And fans are loving the film.
But why are they loving it?
Keeping the plot aside, the film is pure entertainment. Although the theatrical experience must have been phenomenal, the OTT experience of such a film is quite a thrill. Plus, we have to realize the hardcore fanbase of Sethupathi and how versatile he is. With roles like this (just remember his portrayal of Vedha), he always shines.
Despite the action being absolutely spot on, fans are actually praising the screenplay, which is a good thing since most action films come with the presumption of poor writing.
The release of Maharaja was quite limited, which is surprising given Sethupathi’s pan-Indian fanbase who would have loved the theatrical experience. This is good for Netflix as they have something a significant portion of the audience hasn’t seen or experienced.
Maharaja’s dark and gritty action is also something fans are loving. Realistically speaking, Sethupathi and most of his films rarely disappoint in this sector. Overall, fans are loving it, and giving it a weekend release is a good strategy by the OTT giants.
