When the history of home media consumption will be recorded then this era will be recorded as the age of decline.
Because both streaming and regular TV are losing their charm. Now we don’t get shows like Breaking Bad on TV or even Money Heist like blockbusters on streaming is a rarity.
In July 2023, both broadcast and cable TV experienced a significant decline, reaching a historic low in terms of their combined share among American viewers. This drop caused their total TV usage in the United States to fall below 50% for the first time, as reported by Nielsen.
Cable TV’s portion of the viewership dropped below 30% for the first time, experiencing a decline of a full percentage point to reach 29.6%. Additionally, broadcast TV usage decreased by 3.6%, resulting in a decrease of 0.8 percentage points.
This is for the USA.
Now, talking about the UK, the figures showed 57.7% of homes had access to Netflix in the second quarter of 2023, down from 59% in the first quarter.
Amazon Prime Video saw a smaller fall from 44.9% to 44% in the same period.
Yes, the streaming figure increased in the USA but the credit goes to the insane drop in cable TV numbers.
Nowhere are we seeing a balanced growth of both TV and streaming which is a concerning thing for those who claim to make content for home consumption.
