Ajay Devgn’s upcoming Hindi-language biographical film, ‘Maidaan’, has finally received its theatrical release date – 3rd June 2022. This upcoming sure-fire summer blockbuster of a film will be a sports drama based on Indian football in the 1950s and 1960s. The film started shooting in August 2019, but its production was stalled during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Still, the film has now managed to receive a theatrical release date – so full steam ahead.
Based on the golden era of Indian football (1952-1962); follow Ajay Devgn as he takes on the role of football coach Syed Abdul Rahim who coached and managed the Indian football team from the early 1950s till his death in the early 1960s. Syed, who was a teacher by profession, was a good motivator and his tenure as the Indian football coach is quite impressive.
Under his management, he led the Indian Football team to win Gold medals in Asian Games of 1951-Delhi and 1962-Jakarta. India also went on to play in the semi-finals of the 1956 Olympics Melbourne – making India the first ever Asian country to do so. He also managed to win the titles of Colombo Cup in four back-to-back years – 1952-Colombo, 1953-Rangoon, 1954-Calcutta and 1954-Dacca. This put India on the global map of football and Syed showed the world what a good coach could do to motivate a group of young individuals to turn them into hungry footballers.
Maidaan is produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla, and Arunava Joy Sengupta while the screenplay and dialogues are written by Saiwyn Quadras and Ritesh Shah respectively. The film will be directed by ‘Badhaai Ho’ director and producer, Amit Ravindernath Sharma.
