Surender Reddy’s spy action thriller movie ‘Agent’ starring Akhil Akkineni in the lead role was released in theatres on 28th April after a spate of delays. It was revealed earlier that the movie’s digital rights were acquired by the SonyLIV OTT platform. And now, as per the latest update, ‘Agent’ is all set to soon stream on SonyLIV after just three weeks of its theatrical release, that is, from 19th May onwards.
The most likely reason for the film’s early OTT release on SonyLIV might be its insipid, rather disastrous, performance at the box-office. ‘Agent’ failed to attract audiences to the theatres and was not at all received well by many critics also. On movie ticketing portal BookMyShow, ‘Agent’ has received a poor score of just 5.8/10. After the film’s theatrical release, its producer Anil Sunkara accepted and apologized for the film’s massive failure.
‘Agent’ tells the story of an aspiring RAW agent Ricky (Akhil Akkineni), who is recruited by RAW chief Colonel Mahadev (Mammootty). His mission is to track a former agent known as The God (Dino Moreo), who has gone rogue and operates a dangerous terrorist organization in Budapest. Sakshi Vaidya plays the female lead in the film.
It’s not that Telugu films haven’t been released on OTT sooner than expected following their theatrical releases. But the OTT release of ‘Agent’ within just three weeks of its theatrical release is still an uncommon theatrical-OTT release gap which comes as a jolt to the Telugu film industry. Now, it remains to be seen what the upcoming Telugu films like ‘Custody’, ‘Bhola Shankar’ and the highly anticipated ‘Salaar’ have in store for the audiences.
