A freak accident occurred on the sets of ‘Rust’, Alec Baldwin‘s new film that he was shooting for in New Mexico. A prop gun held by Alec Baldwin misfired, claiming the life of director of photography of the film, Halyna Hutchins, 42, and grievously wounding its director, Joel Souza, 48. Hutchins was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital by helicopter, but she couldn’t pull through. Souza is recovering at Christus St. Vincent’s hospital.
The Santa Fe Police Department questioned Alec Baldwin, and later released him after questioning. Investigators also questioned witnesses present on the sets. No arrests have been made or charges filed in the case yet.
The initial statement of the Santa Fe County sheriff’s office says, “According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged. Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”
Alec Baldwin is starring in as well as co-producing the film, ‘Rust’. He is playing the titular character of an outlaw, who breaks his 13-year-old grandson, convicted of an accidental murder, out of prison. The film also stars Frances Fisher, Jensen Ackles, Brady Noon and Travis Fimmel. Joel Souza is the writer and director of the Western. Production on the film has been halted for the time being.
