Alex Garland’s newest sensation, Civil War, is on its way to becoming one of the biggest financial hits from A24. The Kirsten Dunst starrer has already enjoyed the highest-debut opening weekend for any A24 film with $25.5 million. In total, the film has grossed over $38.3 million globally.
Made on a heavy budget of $50 million, Civil War is A24’s most expensive project. It needs to earn at least $100-120 million globally to emerge as a financial success. And it seems like the film may become a financial success, considering its ongoing outstanding theatrical run.
As per Deadline, Civil War is expected to close out Sunday in Week 2, with minting over $11 million during the three-day domestic weekend. This scenario will take the film to the number-one spot. It also means that the latest Alex Garland project will outperform Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (featuring Henry Cavill) and Universal’s vampire horror-comedy, Abigail (starring Melissa Barrera).
Civil War is set in the near future. The film revolves around a team of journalists who travel across the United States to cover a nationwide civil war that destroys democracy and gives birth to unexpected and unexplainable terrors. The film’s cast is packed with sensational talents like Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons, and Sonoya Mizuno. Stay tuned for more updates. It is currently running in theatres worldwide.
