‘Hereditary’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ actor Alex Wolff stars and shines as Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen in ‘So Long Marianne’, the 1960-set series about his relationship with Marianne Ihlen, the great love of his life and the inspiration behind his famous song, and by extension the title of the series itself.
Oystein Karlsen, the Norwegian director and screenwriter of the popularizing series stated that he was astounded to find the perfect representation of his version of the legendary singer as soon as Wolff joined his interview. Wolff’s profile as a singer – half of the pop duo Nat & Alex Wolff – made him an even more lucrative option.
Wolff’s portrayal depicts how deeply entrenched he was with Cohen’s musical work. Not only that, he was also smitten with the late songwriter’s poetry collections, especially his Selected Works. As for the eight-part series, it navigates 20-year-olds escaping the world on the idyllic Greek island of Hydra, only to end in New York, when Cohen, now a rising music star, moves away from the love of his life.
Slated to be released worldwide sometime in 2024, the series received widespread appreciation when it premiered during France’s prestigious Series Mania. For the time being, it is rumored to soon be streaming on Apple TV+.
