Mindy Kaling is most famous among Indian viewers for playing Kelly Kapoor in The Office. She played the customer service representative at Dunder Mifflin in the popular sitcom. The Indian origin American writer, comedian and actress is now coming up with a new show on Netflix, called ‘Never Have I Ever’. The series is a coming-of-age comedy about a high-achieving first generation Indian-American girl called Devi, who’s categorised as a ‘nerd’ by her schoolmates, owing to her brains and her Indian ethnicity.
This is also what the series wants to address – that all Indian-American kids are not nerds, and that all nerds are not ‘stuttering kids on the spectrum’.
Devi is also a girl with a quick temper and a sharp mouth, which gets her into all kinds of trouble. After a particularly trying year – in which she lost her father even as she struggles to fit in, Devi decides that her Sophomore year will be different – most significantly, she aims to snag the hottest boy at school as her boyfriend.
The series is a breezy comedy, with sharp writing and witty dialogues. Canadian youngster Maitreyi Ramakrishnan makes her acting debut as Devi, a casting finalised after an open casting call that attracted 15,000 respondents. Sendhil Ramamurthy plays Devi’s father in the series, while Poorna Jagannathan plays her mother.
Never Have I Ever has been created and written by Mindy Kaling, along with co-creator Lang Fisher. The character of Devi is inspired from Mindy’s own childhood and experiences as a young first-generation Indian-American girl growing up in a Tamilian home.
Kaling and Fisher have also executive-produced the series. Mindy Kaling is known for her writing for The Office, The Mindy Project and the TV adaptation of Four Weddings And A Funeral. Fisher has worked as writer/producer on hit shows such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mindy Project and 30 Rock.
Never Have I Ever arrives on Netflix on 27th April 27.
