Amazon is finally moving forward with the series adaptation of E. Lockhart’s prominent psychological horror young-adult novel ‘We Were Liars’. The upcoming series comes from Julie Plec.
The streaming giant first put the series in the developmental stage in December.
Carina Adly MacKenzie is collaborating with Plec for the forthcoming Amazon show adaptation. The former is known for developing ‘Roswell, New Mexico’ and Plec is best known for creating The Originals. Both shows are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Amazon is clearly looking to dive deep into the young adult genre after entertaining viewers with big-budget fantasy projects, such as The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time. Penned down by E. Lockhart, the novel ‘We Were Liars’ focuses on the wealthy and perfect Sinclair family and explores themes like love, betrayal, lies, and secrets. The Sinclairs spend every summer on their private island. However, something mysterious happened to one of the four ‘Liars’, Cadence, when she was 15. Two years later, the remaining three ‘Liars’ (Gat, Johnny, and Mirren) force Cadence to remember the incident.
Plec, MacKenzie, Lockhart, and Emily Cummins will serve as the series’ executive producers, with Amazon Studios and Universal Studios producing the project.
In 2014, Lockhart’s novel bagged Goodreads Choice Award for ‘Young Adult Fiction’. Additionally, it has spent numerous weeks on the best-selling list of the New York Times.
Apart from Amazon’s ‘We Were Liars’ adaptation, Julie Plec is also attached to HBO Max’s ‘The Girl on the Bus’ series. Stay tuned for more updates.
