Amazon Prime Video has finally announced a release date for its much-talked-about and anticipated series on J.R.R Tolkien’s “Lord Of The Rings” book series. The lavishly-mounted Lord Of The Rings series will premiere on 2nd September 2022 on Amazon Prime Video, in 240 territories across the world. A first look picture from the series has also been revealed, along with the premiere date announcement. The image is apparently from the show’s first episode, but it hasn’t been revealed who the actor or character is.
The first look of the series shows a huge and magnificent castle arising in the distance, offset against imposing mountains and a craggy countryside. A character, which appears to be female, stands on a grassy clearing in the foreground of the image. Only the back of the character, shrouded in a flowing white cape, is visible to the viewer. The identity of the character is still a mystery, to be revealed when the studio and streamer perceives it to be the right time for further revelations.
The “Lord Of The Rings” series has been in development at Amazon Prime Video since long. It was originally slated to premiere in 2021, but the release was delayed owing to the pandemic. Amazon is spending close to $465 million only on the first season of the show, with multiple seasons planned. This makes Amazon Prime Video’s LOTR series the most expensive of all time.
J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay are the showrunners on Amazon Prime Video’s Lord Of The Rings series. There’s no clarity on whether the platform will keep the LOTR title for the show, or go in for another title. The last time J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings was adapted for the screen was in the early 2000s, with the LOTR trilogy — The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). Now, nineteen years later, we’ll have another project adapted from the best-selling books see the light of day.
For those who have no inkling of the books, Lord Of The Rings is a tale of high fantasy and adventure, set in the fictional continent of “Middle Earth”, which humans share with creatures such as Hobbits, elves, dwarves, dragons, and more. The events of the books take place 6000 years before present times. The Amazon Prime Video series on Lord Of The Rings is a prequel of sorts of the books and films. It takes place in the Second Age of Middle-Earth, thousands of years before the events of the novels, which are set in the Third Age of Middle-Earth.
Season 1 of Amazon Prime Video’s show consists of eight episodes and will premiere on 2nd September, 2022, as of now.
