Amazon Prime Video is spending money by the truckloads to grab the best Indian films for direct to digital releases on its platform. As per reports in the media, it has paid a whopping 65 Crores to pick up John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi’s highly anticipated gangster drama, Mumbai Saga. The movie is the pet project of Sanjay Gupta, the maven of gangster dramas.
The liberal and generous spending by Amazon Prime Video is the direct result of the intense streaming wars going on in India. In the race to capture the largest slice of the subscribers pie in India, the top streaming platforms in the country are putting their money where their mouth is.
The top three streamers in the country – Disney Plus Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video – are all engaged in weapon-less warfare – the battle to gain the most subscribers – and their tool of choice is what drives viewership in India – the best Bollywood movies, and recently, regional films like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with top Indian stars.
Mumbai Saga has mopped up a cool amount – 65 Crores in Covid times is a good rate to get. It is a win win for both buyer and seller. Thousands of viewers will tune in to Amazon Prime Video to watch John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi pitted against each other in a battle of guts and wits.
In recent days, Amazon Prime Video has also picked up the exclusive direct to digital release of the much awaited Mohanlal starrer Drishyam 2, sequel of blockbuster hit, Drishyam.
