Amazon Prime Video January Report: ‘Drishyam 2’ Ruled The Month

The first month of the year 2023 for the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform fetched a mixed bag of results when it comes to Indian titles which were released on the streaming service.

We have compiled a list of the popular Indian titles (recent) which were released on Amazon Prime Video in January along with their ‘Hit’ or ‘Miss’ status. ‘Hit’ implies good title acquisition while ‘Miss’ signifies a not-so-good title acquisition by Amazon Prime Video.

Licensed Films

In January 2023, the most premium and hotshot title acquisition by Amazon Prime Video was the critically and commercially successful mystery thriller movie ‘Drishyam 2’. The film once again became the talking point after its non-rental / regular OTT release on Prime Video. So, in a way, January on Prime Video was truly dominated by the superhit sequel.

Similarly, another licensed movie title ‘HIT: The Second Case’ starring Adivi Sesh turned out to be a hit on OTT because of the mostly positive response from audiences after its theatrical release.

However, two critically admired licensed but low-key titles namely ‘Dr.56’ and ‘Pyali’ failed to create the required buzz on OTT. That’s why the ‘Miss’ status. Prime Video acquired these titles with good intentions but they didn’t click in a big way with OTT audiences despite their positive feedback.

Further, the horror comedy movie ‘Phone Bhoot’ was neither an OTT blockbuster nor can it be termed a streaming failure. It was rather an average affair with respect to its OTT release owing to the film’s post theatrical release mixed feedback.

Web Series

Out of the two web-series released on Amazon Prime Video in January 2023, one was a hit and the other one turned out to be a miss. ‘Engga Hostel’ didn’t get unanimously positive reviews from critics and audiences. On the other hand, the docuseries ‘Cinema Marte Dum Tak’ was rather appreciated by many OTT viewers and got decent reviews from critics as well.

Direct-to-OTT Films

No major commercial movie was released directly on Amazon Prime Video during the month of January 2023.
So, overall, there were three ‘Hits’ and four ‘Misses’ for Amazon Prime Video for the month of January 2023.
