Amazon Prime Video October Report: Licensed Films Save the Day

The month of October for the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform fetched interesting results when it comes to Indian titles which were released on the streaming service. A couple of original direct-to-OTT films ‘Ammu’ and ‘Maja Ma’ were released on Prime Video during the month of October. And the most premium and hotshot title acquisition by Amazon Prime Video was Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’, which started streaming in the same month on the Prime Video Store (Rent/PPV).

We have compiled a list of the popular Indian titles (including originals and licensed titles mostly from 2022) which were released on Amazon Prime Video in October along with their ‘Hit’ or ‘Miss’ status. ‘Hit’ implies good title acquisition while ‘Miss’ signifies not-so-good title acquisition by Amazon Prime Video.

So, as you can see above, October month has been an interesting mix of hits and misses for Amazon Prime Video.

While one of its direct-to-OTT releases ‘Ammu’ garnered widespread admiration amongst OTT audiences, the other one ‘Maja Ma’ rather failed to elicit similar acclaim from OTT viewers. Although Madhuri Dixit’s performance in the film was lauded by many fans.

Moreover, on the web series front, both the October releases on Amazon Prime Video namely ‘Four More Shots Please Season-3’ and ‘Flames Season-3’ couldn’t impress a prominent segment of streaming audiences.

It was the licensed films portfolio like ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’, ‘Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu’ and ‘Naane Varuvean’ which Amazon Prime Video had acquired, which turned out to be the saving grace for the OTT platform for the month of October. They have contributed to as many as six ‘Hit’ titles for Amazon Prime Video in October. And if we exclude these six ‘Hit’ titles from Amazon Prime Video’s October releases, the success percentage is bound to drop down drastically.

So, overall, there were seven ‘Hits’ and four ‘Misses’ for Amazon Prime Video for the month of October.
