Amazon Prime Video’s marquee show, Hunters, has landed into a soup. It has been accused of trivialising the grave memories of the Holocaust by fictionalizing atrocities in Nazi death camps, such as a game of human chess in which people are killed when a piece is taken. The sequences have been called out for being in bad taste.
Hunters has been pulled up by no less an entity than the Holocaust memorial organisation called The Auschwitz Memorial, which preserves the Nazi German death camp of southern Poland, where 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed in horrifying circumstances.
Hunters is the story of a group of vigilantes that rallies together to hunt down Nazis that escaped Germany after World War II and settled in America, where they planned to unleash another genocide.
The Auschwitz Memorial conveyed its displeasure with the Amazon Prime series via a tweet that read, “Inventing a fake game of human chess for @huntersonprime is not only dangerous foolishness & caricature. It also welcomes future deniers.”
