Amazon Prime’s Subtitling Nightmare Continues With Rathnan Prapancha

By Binged Bureau - Oct 22, 2021 @ 04:10 pm

Amazon Prime Video released a Kannada film directly for streaming last night called ‘Rathnan Prapancha’… and it was a good watch. Or at least, we think so. Because, while the premise of the film was quite interesting and the story made us want to finish the entire movie, the poor subtitling killed the entire wonderlust-positivity vibes of the feature film. While a lot of the dialogue is not properly subtitled, there are portions in the ‘Rathnan Prapancha’ where entire lines are skipped. This irregularity is just another example of how Amazon Prime Video has continued to give us content with subpar subtitles.

‘Sunny’, ‘Udanpirappe’ and now ‘Rathnan Prapancha’ are just a few recent examples of Amazon Prime Video direct-to-OTT released films that have had subtitle issues so far. And upon closer look – South Indian content such as Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films have had the biggest regional language to English errors during subtitling. Hollywood (or English language films) and Bollywood films so far don’t seem to have much problems with subtitlers – which means that the Quality Control Team of Amazon Prime Video India needs more dual (regional and English) language speakers under their employment.

Make no mistake; ‘Rathnan Prapancha’ is by no means a bad film. The movie talks about many important moral points and social sentiments but the subtitling keeps making us guess the dialogue due to its indecipherable nature. Hopefully, Amazon Prime Video will correct these subtitling issues and we will be able to enjoy the movie soon. But it all depends on how seriously the streaming platform will take this issue and how quickly they will respond to it.
