Amazon is about to hit us with the right amount of nostalgia as they are planning to develop Steven Spielberg’s iconic horror creation ‘Poltergeist’ into a TV series.
‘Poltergeist’, a classic 1982 film directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written by Spielberg, explores a suburban family’s struggle when their daughter is taken by ghosts. Even at the time of the release, it came out as a big box office hit, earning $76 million domestically and $121 million globally, which was a significant figure for that period of time.
The success was followed up by certain sequels in 1986 and a remake in 2015. Now, their attempt to transform it into a TV series is nothing but a tribute to the ongoing OTT wave of ‘It was successful once, let’s make it a TV series’.
If the Amazon MGM Studios project proceeds, it would mark the second foray into the ‘Poltergeist’ universe on television. ‘Poltergeist: The Legacy’ aired on Showtime for three seasons, concluding with a final season on the Sci-Fi Channel in 1999.
No specific updates have been given either about the cast or about the creative team. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will simply play their roles as the executive producers of the show. About the plot, not much has been discussed except the fact that the show will take place in the same world as the cinema.
The future adaptation of ‘Poltergeist’ also joins the long list of TV series adaptations based on films, and being a Spielberg project, it is destined to create a buzz. Amazon has been handling their content with care recently, and this won’t be an exception. No date or timeline has been declared, but tune into Binged to get more updates.
