Amidst the ongoing Coronavirus crisis and next to nil footfall in theatres, Paramount Pictures has decided to forego a theatrical release for its forthcoming movie ‘The Lovebirds’. Streaming giant Netflix has gladly come to the rescue of the former, and picked up The Lovebirds for exclusive digital release on its platform.
Romcom drama, The Lovebirds, stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanji as the titular lovebirds who are caught in the center of a murder they did not commit. This is the first instance that a major Hollywood production house has pulled a movie out of the theatres to put it to stream online.
Most releases in Hollywood enjoy an unhindered theatrical window before finding their way to streaming platforms. Some even take as much time as a year to release on OTT. However, in light of the growing uncertainty regarding upcoming releases, Paramount obviously decided it is better to release the film digitally.
NBCUniversal’s Trolls World Tour is the other upcoming movie that will release on digital, albeit it is for digital rental and will stream simultaneously with a theatrical release.
