Bollywood actress Kajol recently made her digital debut with hard-hitting short film Devi, which is streaming on the YouTube channel of Large Short Films. Commendably, the film has raked in an impressive 12 million views within ten days of release. This despite it being slapped with plagiarism charges by a young filmmaker called Abhishek Rai, who has alleged in a Facebook post that Kajol’s movie has “heavy resemblance with his short film, ‘Four’, which he wrote and directed in 2018.”
The film’s producer Niranjan Iyengar has dismissed the plagiarism allegations. For those not in the know, Kajol’s film Devi released on 2nd March on YouTube, and almost immediately, the film was caught in the eye of a raging storm – that of plagiarism charges.
Even viewers who watched both films agreed that the similarities between the two films were too stark and obvious to be coincidences. Nevertheless, Devi marches on, with 12 million views already under its belt, and certainly more to follow, as people get increasingly homebound and self-quarantine themselves owing to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Devi has been directed by Priyanka Banerjee and produced by Electric ApplesEntertainment, and Large Short Films. It stars Kajol, Shruti Haasan, Neha Dhupia, Neena Kulkarni, Mukta Barve, Sandhya Mhatre, Rama Joshi, Shivani Raghuvanshi, and Yashaswini Dayama in pivotal roles.
