On the auspicious occasion of Ugadi, the Telugu people’s beloved series Amrutham has begun its second innings. It is happening on a web platform, Zee5.
The first three episodes of Amrutham Dwitheeyam are out now. And the first impression, after a bit of apprehension is that of a positive one. Initially, it takes time to get used to LB Sriram in the place of Anjaneyulu. The ‘innocence’ factor is missing. But, once one gets past that, there is no looking back.
What strikes the most in the opening few episodes is the writing. It is still witty as it was in the past. At times, there is a feeling of trying too hard, but it still operates in the familiar, lovable zone. The ‘meta’ angle and humour further give an edge. And so does the incorporation of real-life events.
The cast is the same leaving out the late Gundu Hanumantha Rao. They all continue from where they left in the past. Sivannarayana as Appaji feels like he is born to play that role with his effortless slippage into the character. Harshavardhan is fabulous as usual, and so is Vasu Inturi as Sarvam.
Ultimately, the past has an intense bout of nostalgia attached to it, which clouds our judgement. More so, when it is a classic like Amrutham. The comedy has also changed over the years with ‘Jabardasth’ brand ruling the roost. It makes one feel as if there will be no match. Sure that might be the case, eventually, but right now, the opening is on target, and one can look forward to healthy and hearty laughs ahead.
