The film is centered around the first world war, exactly as the title suggests. The film revolves around the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich.
It tells the story of two British soldiers, Will Schofield played by George MacKay and Tom Blake played by Dean-Charles Chapman. They are on a mission to deliver an important message to call off an attack that will ultimately harm the Britishers.
Unfortunately, one of them has a personal angle to the attack and he dies even before the completion of the mission. The movie has some horrifying scenes and some soothing as well.
It was received extremely positively after its release and won many awards.
