An Hilarious Period Drama: Raghu Thatha

Raghu Thatha, the directorial debut of Suman Kumar, famed writer of The Family Man, will be released on 15th of August along with the likes of Thangalaan and Demonte Colony 2. The movie stars Keerthy Suresh and other cast members include M S Baaskar, Ravindra Vijay, Devadarshini, Rajeev Ravindranathan, Jayakumar, Anandsami, and Rajesh Balachandiran. The music is composed by Sean Roldan.

The movie is a period comedy that talks of the problem faced by the Tamilians in adapting to Hindi language. In fact, the title of the movie itself is a mistaken Hindi sentence spoken by a Tamilian. The sentence being “Ek gaon mein ek kisaan rehta tha.” where “rehta tha” is being pronounced as “Raghu Thatha” which literally means “Raghu’s grandfather”. Keerthy Suresh, like multiple movies in her past filmography, plays a very challenging part in the movie of an educated and independent female in a time when women were considered inferior. Her performance looks quite remarkable in the trailer and the elements of laughter seem genuine, not forced. The movie takes up a very sensitive subject of language divide between North and South India and enforcement of a non-native language over the people. This issue is something that prevails even today, and various debates are organised from parliament to colleges on the same subject. This makes the movie not only periodic but also contemporary. The performances by other actors too seems to elevate the movie’s quality. One may surely enjoy the movie if one is a fan of social satires.

The movie will release on Independence Day in Tamil and Telugu languages. CBFC has rated it as U making it watchable for each section of the society. The movie expects a wide opening at the box office on its day of release. It will clash with Chiyan Vikram’s Thangalaan and Arulnithi’s Demonte Colony for box office domination. It is expected to be one of the top cinemas in the South regional industry and is set to create fire in the theatres.
