One of the biggest hits for Prime Video last year was Tamil superstar Suriya’s ‘Jai Bhim’. In a delightful announcement to fans, a sequel of the OTT blockbuster is in development. There are more stories of cases fought by Justice K Chandru, and the movie is expected to be based on one of them.
It is in the backdrop of the IFFI 53 that co-producer of the film Rajasekar talked about the sequel being in development. He mentioned how a sequel to the movie is in the pipeline since discussions have already started. Since Suriya is a busy star and has a lot of other film commitments and the film is in its early stages, it is unsure when it will come out.
‘Jai Bhim’ is not a movie you watch when you just need to spend your weekend, eating popcorn on your sofa. The movie is raw, and real and is a reflection of the saddening reality that many of us are fortunate enough to not have experienced. Based on a true incident in 1993, which involves a case fought by Justice K. Chandru, the movie tells the story of a tribal couple and what they had to go through, for a crime they did not commit. The movie strikes the watchers right where it hurts, and reveals the darker, ignored side of society, and not just be a glossy bit.
The movie depicts the helpless oppression people have to still face in the name of caste, and flaws in law enforcement and the justice system. It revolves around the lives of Sengeni( Lijomol Jose) and Rajakannu( Manikandan), a couple from the Irular tribe. When Rajakannu was arrested by the police, and later goes missing from the police station, Sengeni seeks the help of an advocate Chandru( Suriya) to seek justice for her husband and this forms the premise for the movie.
Upon release ‘Jai Bhim’ was met with universal critical acclaim, especially for its story, performances, direction, and social message. It is hoped that the sequel will be released in theatres this time. With the nationwide popularity of ‘Jaim Bhim’ even in other languages, the movie is sure to reach an even wider audience.
