However big fans of Hindi cinema we might be there are always some movies that we miss out on watching. There is a huge number of underrated movies that are not much talked about. ‘My Brother…Nikhil’ is such a film. It is directed by Onir and has its story and screenplay written by Onir himself.
The movie is slightly based on the life of Dominic d’Souza and heartfelt tale of an AIDS victim. ‘My Brother….Nikhil’ tells the story of Nikhil, a homosexual man who is selected foe a prestigious tournament when he suddenly discovers that he has been affected by HIV. His world turns upside down and he has to leave his career as a swimmer. He does not know how long he will manage to live. His sister Anu and his boyfriend Nigel try to share his pain in the troubled times.
Sanjay Suri plays the leading role and actors like Juhi Chawla, Victor Banerjee, Purab Kohli play other important roles. The performances are subtle and powerful. The music of the movie is given by Vivek Philip and the cinematography is handled by Arvind Kannabiran.
Onir is a filmmaker that has wonderfully depicted the angst of the homosexual in Hindi films. His stories dealing with homosexuality and AIDS are empathetic and heart-wrenching.
