Do you remember 2022? Just one bad financial year and everyone was screaming that Bollywood is dead. They pronounced that the industry would be dead soon and only South Indian films will rule the theatres in the north. You can smirk at such thoughts as the Hindi film industry made a solid comeback last year and gave many huge blockbusters.
A similar bad phase is ruining the potential of 2024. Other than a few movies like Fighter, Crew and Shaitaan, no Hindi film made a strong mark at the box office.
The giant superstars such as Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn are giving pitiable box office numbers that are more concerning for the industry than their personal image.
But amidst all this drama, one movie really surprised everyone. We are talking about Munjya. If and only if Kalki 2898 AD was scheduled for the next week then the movie would easily earn 100 crores at the box office.
It is such a small film that it probably trades pundits and people would not even notice. But the content and people’s love has made it a phenomenal success. Made on a slightly inflated budget of 30 crores, the movie turned out to be a sleeper blockbuster for the industry. More and more producers should work on innovative new projects to save the industry from getting stale. Let’s hope that Munjya’s OTT run comes out to be equally strong.
