And The Remakes Of Dhanush’s Blockbuster ‘Karnan’ Begin!!

‘Karnan’, Dhanush’s latest film has taken the South-Indian box office by storm – the Tamil Nadu Box Office in particular. This hit film is loosely based on the 1995 Kodiyankulam caste violence that happened in the Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu. With the impressive Box Office numbers that the film is raking in, the Telugu film industry has decided to pick this film up for a remake, in said language. The ‘Karnan’ remake already has a producer as well as a lead actor lined up to portray ‘Dhanush’s role in the film.

‘Karnan’ released in theatres during the second week of this month, on 8th April 2021. A day before the film’s premiere, the Tamil Nadu Government decided to re-implement the 50% attendance-only in theatres, which was initially removed in January, days after Vijay’s ‘Master’ got released. But despite this major setback, ‘Karnan’ managed to get back its initial production cost of Rs. 40 crores and went on to make Rs. 63 crores within its first three days of release. This also signalled this film’s potential marketability among other Indian film industries.

Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas is expected to play the pivotal lead role in the Telugu remake of ‘Karnan’. The lead actor’s father, Bellamkonda Suresh has bought the Telugu remake’s rights for ‘Karnan and will act as its producer. All of this is informal and behind the scenes so far, but we expect an official announcement declaring the same, soon.

Karnan‘ follows the titular character, who is a bold youth from a village in Tamil Nadu. The young man must fight for the rights of the people in his village who belong to a “lower-class” community. This community has been ruled by the “upper-class caste” members in the region for a long time and the local law enforcement are under their thumb, who helps with the oppression of Karnan’s village. The story follows the struggles and unfairness faced by the village at the hands of the police and they eventually rise against them when the suffering becomes too much – with the help of the local lad, Karnan.
