Writer, director and actor Anish Kuruvilla has been a storyteller who’s clearly tried to reinvent himself with every project.
The diversity of his subjects, be it Avakai Biryani, Ko Ante Koti or the recently released Gods of Dharmapuri, truly shows the versatility he aims to attain.
But anyone with an understanding of the entertainment industry would admit that Gods of Dharmapuri brought out the best out of Anish and helped him find his voice, unaffected by commercial pressures.
Speaking with Binged.com, Anish described the differences between directing a web series vs a film, from the perspective of a filmmaker:
“I think the most important thing that a director must realise is the huge amount of time a viewer is willing to spend on a series. Because of the time taken to tell the story, the viewers bond with characters. There’s also a personal connection for a director with the audience, as a result.”
According to Anish, great writing is critical in a web series and will decide its fate. He added:
“It is also a great opportunity to dive into details, plots, various perspectives. You take a leap of faith and trust that the audience would make all the connections and understand it. For instance, the mixture of languages in the series – Telugu, Kannada, Hindi. Films are a social experience while the digital medium is a personalised experience. So there’s always a space to improvise and experiment.”
