Social media sensation Kusha Kapila recently took a turn towards acting, or maybe her internet popularity made producers turn her to acting. She has been featured in a number of movies and web series since her debut in 2020. Especially last year, she was offered roles in three movies as well as a couple of web series. Her most recent work came out as a web series named Life Hill Gayi starring Divyendu Mukti Mohan and Vinay Pathak other than herself. The web series is available on Disney+ Hotstar to watch.
The series is about two siblings Dev (Divyendu) and Kalki (Kusha), who inherit their grandfather’s mansion in a rural area in Uttarakhand. Their mission is to turn the ruined mansion into a luxury hotel. Whoever succeeds in the mission, will get all of their grandfather’s wealth. The plot is based on a basically rags-to-riches theme and the series seems like a cheap imitation of Schitt’s Creek.
The series has several plus points like the acting of Divyendu and Vinay Pathak that makes each scene livelier. Mukti comes as a surprise package with her quite appreciable performance on the screen. One surely won’t accept such good acting from her (a dancer). The story is quite unique and has potential though it is marred by bad writing and direction. Overall, the series is watchable and though disappointing, there are people who don’t want to consume heavy content and will enjoy this movie.
What is most concerning is Kusha Kapila’s performance in the series. Kusha can be seen having difficulty in portraying the character and compensates for her inability with overacting which further messes up the issue. Her character is one of the most important parts of the series and hence the bad performance impacts the whole series. This leads one to look at the past filmography of Kusha where she has constantly disappointed fans through her acting, still she is cast in next projects. This brings to the main issue of turning influencers to actors to gain audience by their long followers list and in the process killing the performance. Kusha is an example but we have seen many others like Ashish Chanchlani, Harsh Beniwal, Prajakta Koli etc. who were given a chance in the film industry due to their followers but performed drastically killing the essence of cinema.
This process of turning non-actors to actors just to gain an audience can prove and is proving hazardous and soon we may see many good movies and series with a very good potential falling victim to this practice.
