The late 2000s and early 2010s was a revolutionary time in Bollywood as makers tried experimenting with new ideas and interesting plots irrespective of the box office collections these films did. This opened a new window of opportunities for several ideas coming to the big screen. While some were underwhelming and declared as a disaster, some were engaging but never got the recognition they deserved.
Sanket City is one of those films that tried to introduce dark comedy in the country when it wasn’t even a thing. Back in 2009, the film didn’t get many promotional campaigns and interviews and wasn’t even declared to be good by some of the critics. However, years after its release and judging the comedic content from Bollywood nowadays, the film is regarded as one of the best dark comedies to exist.
The plot revolves around Ganpat, played by Dilip Prabhavalkar, and Guru, played by Kay Kay Menon, who are part-time car thieves. They steal a Mercedes one night for Rs. 10 million without realizing it belongs to a ruthless loan shark and a thug named Faujdaar, who is portrayed by Anupam Kher. The hitman Suleman Supari, portrayed by Rahul Dev, recognizes the stolen Mercedes and alerts his friend Faujdaar when they attempt to sell it to him.
As situational as it sounds, the film wastes no time in developing the story with several black comedy jokes that don’t require forced humor. Anupam Kher and KK Menon steal the show in this one with their impeccable comic timing throughout the film.
