Aparna Sen’s ‘The Rapist’ Gets Thumbs-Up From IFFK 2022 Audience

Eminent Indian filmmaker Aparna Sen’s latest directorial drama film ‘The Rapist’ starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Arjun Rampal, and Tanmay Dhanania, has received a thumbs-up from the audiences at the ongoing International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). Owing to the film’s encouraging response and unprecedented public demand, ‘The Rapist’ will be getting an additional screening on 24th March midnight, that is, tonight at 12 AM.

The Rapist’ is a hard-hitting film that follows a Delhi-based criminal psychology professor Naina Malik (Konkona Sen Sharma), who is the victim of a ghastly incident in a slum area. Arjun Rampal plays her husband. The film explores the idea of the extent of the society itself being responsible for producing rapists. The plotline revolves around the three principal characters of Arjun Rampal, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Tanmay Dhanania and how their stories intersect after the horrific incident and its aftermath.

‘The Rapist’ was first showcased at last year’s Busan International Film Festival where the film bagged the prestigious Kim Jiseok award.

The 8-day International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), which commenced on 18th March and will conclude on 25th March, had scheduled to screen 173 films in 15 different categories. Besides Aparna Sen’s ‘The Rapist’, the festival has showcased Thai horror film ‘The Medium’, ‘Titane’, ‘Spencer’, ‘Petite Maman’, ‘Lamb’, ‘Pebbles’, ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’, ‘Nayattu’, and several films from Kurdistan, Myanmar, and Afghanistan, amongst others.

After making her acting debut in Satyajit Ray’s short film ‘Teen Kanya’, acclaimed filmmaker Aparna Sen went on to make her directorial debut in 1981 with the National Film Award-winning film ’36 Chowringhee Lane’.

‘The Rapist’ marks Aparna Sen’s sixth collaboration with her daughter and adept actress Konkona Sen Sharma. The duo’s first film together was the critically acclaimed ‘Mr. and Mrs. Iyer’, co-starring Rahul Bose.

Konkona Sen Sharma will next be seen in Raman Bhardwaj’s drama film ‘Scholarship’ and Aasman Bhardwaj’s thriller ‘Kuttey’. While Arjun Rampal’s forthcoming acting projects include Abbas Mastan’s mystery thriller ‘Penthouse’, ‘Black Currency: The Fake Currency Truth Unfolds’, and Kangana Ranaut starrer action film ‘Dhaakad’.
