Applause Entertainment Film ‘The Rapist’ Goes To Busan Film Fest

After entertaining audiences with blockbuster shows such as Scam 1992, Criminal Justice, Out Of Love, and a raft of others, Applause Entertainment have entered the world of films with their maiden film, ‘The Rapist’. Almost instantaneously, their first film ever has brought prestigious recognition to the prolific production house. ‘The Rapist’ has made it to the 26th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), to be held at Busan between October 6 and 15.

The Rapist has been selected as one of seven films to compete for the esteemed Kim Jiseok Award at the film festival. Applause Entertainment’s maiden film will have its World Premiere at Busan, in the ‘A Window on Asian Cinema’ category.

The film is directed by distinguished filmmaker Aparna Sen, and stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Arjun Rampal and Tanmay Dhanania as primary protagonists. ‘The Rapist’ is a co-production between Applause Entertainment and Quest Films. It is a hard-hitting film that “examines how much of society is responsible for producing rapists”, as per director Aparna Sen.

The narrative looks beyond the crime to delve into the aftermath of it from the perspective of the victim, perpetrator, and society at large. It delves into the psychology of the protagonists, and into the crime itself, and dares to address the elephant in the room – why do we, as a country, churn out rapists in such large numbers?
