The entertainment world is buzzing with the news that ‘Cherry’, Tom Holland’s highly anticipated movie with the Russo Brothers has been grabbed by Apple TV Plus. The buzz has been enhanced by the massive financial details of Apple TV Plus’ acquisition. The streamer has reportedly paid a sum close to $50 million to acquire the edgy drama.
By acquiring ‘Cherry’, Apple TV Plus has grabbed a property that was hotly coveted by the top global streaming platforms, but most of all, by Netflix. The streaming giant has time and again expressed its desire to pick up Cherry. It was one of the keenest pursuers of Cherry since the time the movie was in the making. And Netflix was certain that it would snare Cherry. The deal was most likely to go through and Cherry would land on Netflix.
But….Apple TV Plus swooped in from nowhere and grabbed Cherry right from under Netflix‘s nose, even though it had to shell out a hefty amount — close to $50 million — for the movie.
Cherry is Joe and Anthony Russo‘s first directorial effort after their last money-spinner, Avengers: Endgame, which has earned the distinction of highest earning movie of all time at the box office. The movie is written by Angela Russo-Otstot and Jessica Goldberg. It has been adapted from Nico Walker’s bestselling novel, in which he has documented the true story of his life.
The film features Tom Holland in another edgy role, edgier than his last in Netflix’s The Devil All The Time. He plays a former Army medico, who suffers from extreme undiagnosed post trauma stress disorder (PTSD), after returning from his stint in Iraq. He becomes an opioid addict, and takes to robbing banks to finance his addiction.
Cherry stars Ciara Bravo as Tom Holland’s co-star, along Kelli Burglund, Jack Reynor, Forrest Goodluck, Jeff Wahlberg, among others.
With Cherry, Apple TV Plus has grabbed another high profile movie, one which also has immense Oscar buzz. Apple TV Plus plans to release Cherry in early 2021, just in time for the Academy Awards 2021.
