Apple TV+’s upcoming feature film Cherry, is dropping in theaters next month. The crime-drama movie is based on American author Nico Walker’s debut novel of the same name which was published back in 2018 by Alfred A. Knopf. The movie was adapted for the screen by Angela Russo-Otstot and Jessica Goldberg and is directed by the legendary director-duo, Anthony and Joe Russo. The trailer for the film dropped a few hours ago and it is heart-wrenching.
Tom Holland stars as the titular character, Cherry and it is evident that the young actor has digged deep for this role. He portrays a poor, young man who drops out of college to join the United States Army. The trailer initially shows that he had found the love of his life, Emily, during his time in college but he then decides to drop everything to enter the military to make something of himself. He travels the world and goes on many missions, seeing many unbelievable things, doing many regrettable things.
He eventually returns home to Emily, but PTSD keeps him up all night and threatens to destroy his new civilian life. He resorts to opioids to keep the voices in his head at bay and eventually he gets addicted. After some time passes, he finds that he doesn’t have money to pay for his drug addiction. With the voices returning, he decides that the only way he can live is by using the opioids, so he starts robbing banks to fund his addiction.
The book that the movie Cherry is based off is a semi-autobiography of sorts. Nico Walker is a US Army Veteran who served time for robbing banks. Cherry will give us a unique look at the opioid epidemic which was prevalent during the mid to late 2000s (still prevalent in some parts of the US even today). The distribution rights for the film were contested by Netflix but they eventually lost out to Apple TV+.
Cherry will hit theaters around the globe on February 26th 2021 and will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ on March 12th 2021. Check the trailer for the film down below:
