The AppleTV+ Series ‘Shantaram‘ is canceled after only one season and fans are disappointed with this decision.
The first episode of the show premiered on 14th of October this year and it got mixed reviews. Fans were excited to see a digital adaptation of the famous novel ‘Shantaram’ by Gregory David Roberts. It had a total of 12 episodes and was directed by Justin Kurzel, Bharat Nalluri and Iain B. MacDonald.
‘Shantaram’ is the semi autobiographical story of the writer and talks about a drug addict criminal Lin Ford who escapes prison in Australia after a bank robbery and flees to India. He meets a person in Mumbai who takes him to a village where everybody starts to call him Shantaram and he learns Marathi there. He finds himself in Afghanistan due to his ties with crime and the underworld.
The news of the cancellation of the show came ahead of the release of the last episode of season one. There was a controversy at the time of the premiere of Shantaram that Hollywood producers and streaming platforms like to always portray the poorer side of India and focus on the darker, criminal elements of the country instead of the positive side. The show got lukewarm reviews from audiences and many of them were not happy with the representation of India there. Yet, many fans were satisfied because it followed the novel quite earnestly.
It had a cast of Charlie Humnam, Antonia Desplat, Elektra Kilbey, Shubham Saraf and many others. There is one more part of the story ‘The Mountain Shadow’, but it looks like AppleTV+ is not anymore interested in continuing the story any further.
