Ask anyone how did they like a film or a series, they would most probably answer with reference to story or acting performances. But what about the technical details? Hardly does anyone ever talk about it, often ignoring that it’s an essential aspect of filmmaking. Whether the film goes to theatres or an OTT platform, the technicalties are undeniably an important feature.
The type of camera, the sound effects, the resolution, the frame speed and what not goes behind the scene to produce a phenomenal piece of fiction for us to consume. An unimaginable amount of detailing goes into producing a state of the art film. Making it one of the major reasons why big budget films are reluctant to go for a direct-to-digital release.
The amount of details that one can notice on a big screen is comparatively larger than those given heed to on a small screen like TV or mobile devices. At times, on small screens the outcome might not be what the technical team would expect. Although if the filmmakers get to have a preview of their content before it goes public they could rectify any shortcomings.
If OTTs become flexible about this, it could lead to a better viewing experience. Moreover, the longer shelf life of content on OTT platforms makes it more so important to fulfill the standard quality criterias. Although, what if all is good from the side of the filmmaker but your internet starts acting up?
We are all aware about the instability of strong internet connection across India. As the quality of video on OTT platforms adjusts according to the internet speed, a lot of technical hardwork goes down the drain when the video streams at a lower resolution. This is a worrisome aspect that the OTT platforms could look into, especially in India.
If OTTs are to stay and be viable in a post lockdown scenario, quality is one aspect they will have to gain stronger hold of. Whether they get into deals with the telecom operators and internet providers or make changes in their own software and app features, is upto them. All in all, one thing is for sure, in longer term quality always wins over quantity.
