The evolution of Indian Cinema seems to have come right on the cusp of it and all the credit goes to the rise of OTT platforms in the country. These platforms have given story tellers the freedom of expression like never before. This is evident from the array of content coming up on these streaming services.
If not for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+Hotstar and the likes of it, we hardly would have had the privilege of getting to see content like Sacred Games, Mirzapur, Delhi Crimes, Aarya, Guilty, Paatal Lok, etc. The makers would have otherwise been caught in the ever so confusing labyrinth of red tapes set both by the society and the government.
Thanks to streaming services, the makers now have the creative freedom to present a raw thought in the most natural way as possible. They have no pressure to put any meaning-less songs in between or to fudge the dialogues or tweak the plot just to become likeable by the masses. This was all possible because of the subscription based viewership on the OTT platforms that provides a wide range of content to choose from.
These platforms give the power in the hands of the audience who can then choose to the best of their liking. The young tilt of our democracy aids in this process of renewed storytelling. Their openness to unadulterated narratives is a big push for the writers who earlier had no avenue to showcase their ideas.
Though, not all has been hunky-dory for such content makers and these OTT platforms. They still, at times, have to face the wrath from a section of society who feel offended by a certain type of content. But given the diversity and size of our population it will never be possible to please everyone. All this aside, what matters is that the change in storytelling in Indian cinema is real and there to stay.
