Given the recent trend of massy thrilling action packed films like Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa’, SS Rajamouli’s ’RRR’, Yash’s ’KGF: Chapter 2’ or Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vikram’ gathering larger audiences, it’s refreshing to see family entertainer dramas like ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ and ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’ coming out strong.
But did you notice one major difference in the above mentioned titles? While the former are all those pan Indian films that come from regional film industries and are dubbed and released in multiple languages, the later ones cater strictly to the Hindi speaking audience.
So does that mean what’s working for the regional film industries and Hindi film industry are two different things? Going by the recent past this somewhere seems logical too but it’s not entirely true.
Consider this, almost none of the post pandemic Hindi movies that have done well at the box office belong anywhere even close to the mass action gangster kinda genre. Whether it was the highly acclaimed historical drama ‘The Kashmir Files’, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s biographical drama ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ or the most recent horror comedy ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, each of these belonged to completely different cinematic worlds and yet did wonderfully in their own ways at the box office.
But how do we know that massy action hindi films would work or not when there’s nothing contemporary to compare with. After all ‘Pushpa’, ‘RRR’, ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, did well in the Hindi circuits too. In fact both pan Indian and Hindi films have together helped the theatre industries all across the nation to bounce back.
This goes on to show that nothing works in exclusion and every successful post pandemic film in any industry has somewhere helped the cinema industry of the country as a whole. In the end it’s always about quality content and a creative filmmaker’s vision along with an able to team to make it a reality that makes good cinema.
