Malayalam film ‘Antharam‘ has scored several firsts for the Malayalam film industry. The film centres on the life experiences of a trans woman, played by real-life trans woman, Negha Shahin, as the lead actress in the film. Consequently, Negha Shahin became the first trans woman to win the Kerala State Film Award in the category Woman/Transgender.
‘Antharam’ played at various film festivals across the world, including the Jaipur International Film Festival 2022, Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival 2022, Bangalore Queer Film Festival 2022 and the International Film Festival of Thrissur (IFFT) 2022. At every outing, ‘Antharam’ won appreciation and approval from the diverse audiences.
The Malayalam film did not release in theatres in India, given its niche subject. Now ‘Antharam’ is all set to skip theatres and release directly on OTT. The film will premiere on 24th April, 2023, on the exclusive Malayalam streaming platform, Koode App.
‘Antharam’ is directed by P. Abhijith, from a screenplay written by Shanavas M. A. The movie is about the inner conflicts, warmth, trauma and joyous moments in the lives of a trans woman, a teenage girl and a man living under the same roof.
Teenager Sneha (Nakshathra Manoj) comes to live with her father (Kannan Nayar), and stepmother (Negha Shahin). She keeps aloof from her stepmother in the beginning, but gradually gets enamoured by her strength of character and way of living. She tries to understand the difficulties faced by her stepmother, who is a trans woman, in her marriage with a normal man.
The premise of ‘Antharam’ is a unique one, making it a highly anticipated film to watch for fans of artsy movies. ‘Antharam’ streams on Koode App from 24th April. Have a look at the trailer of the film –
