Bachchhan Paandey Proves Doubters Wrong With a Strong Start

Bachchhan Paandey has had a formidable Friday at the box office. Early reports suggest that it is estimated to rake in around Rs. 14 crores approximately. Bachchhan Paandey is a mass entertainer starring Akshay Kumar, whose movies have usually drawn audiences to the big screen. So then, why were various trade analysts estimating lower collection numbers?

The movie was facing headwinds from various quarters. First and foremost, it is facing stiff competition from The Kashmir Files. The Kashmir Files has had a roaring first week with its box office collections improving significantly from its opening day. Given ‘The Kashmir Files’ increasing popularity, it was being reported that Bachchhan Paandey may have ended up with around 400-500 fewer screens than what it had earlier anticipated.

Secondly, although the movie was released on a holiday which should have given it an advantage, movies in most markets were screened only post afternoon due to the festival of Holi. This meant that it would not be able to capitalize completely on the public holiday.

Bachchhan Pandey is an action comedy directed by Farhad Samji and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Apart from Akshay Kumar, it stars Kriti Sanon, Jacqueline Fernandez and Arshad Warsi. It is a remake of the 2014 Tamil film Jigarthanda which itself was inspired by the 2006 South Korean movie A Dirty Carnival.

With higher-than-expected collections on day 1, the movie is now estimated to collect more than Rs. 50 crores in its opening weekend. These numbers also indicate that the Indian Box Office at this point has truly recovered back to its pre-covid levels. This would be music to the movie fraternity, cinema owners and all stakeholders.
