Will Smith practically slapped the box office (not his first big-time slap), and his “Bad Boys 4” might be the biggest summer hit the box office needed.
To paint a picture, “Jaws” from 1975 started this tradition, and Steven Spielberg was a visionary, for sure. Since then, the tradition has continued. But this year, the box office has been slower than anticipated.
“Bad Boys 4” is making an exception.
“Furiosa” was one that had the potential to be a big-time hit this summer, but it failed drastically. Though “Mad Max” is a benchmark of the industry, the prequel didn’t work. Plus, fans didn’t take well to the change of cast.
But “Bad Boys 4” is doing the trick for the box office.
In the domestic market, the film opened with $56M, and in 60 territories, it made $48.6M, marking the first big box office hit of the summer releases. Being a sequel, it required less prep time and less advertisement. Especially for the American audience, the film was already popular.
New films such as “Inside Out 2” and Marvel’s highly anticipated “Deadpool and Wolverine” will soon knock on the door. But until then, “Bad Boys 4” will do what it does best—rule the box office.
