A new Brazilian Netflix series titled ‘Desparate Lies’ has premiered today on Netflix and when you read its premise you cannot deny the uncanny resemblance with upcoming Bollywood comedy drama ‘Bad Newz’ starring Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk.
In ‘Desparate Lies’ the story begins with Liana’s extremely rare case of heteropaternal superfecundation (the same condition quoted in ‘Good Newz’ trailer) – though the series is fictional, there are around 20 confirmed cases worldwide – and it transforms the protagonist’s life in every way, with twists and turns that impact the dreams of her entire family.
Liana, a woman who wants to be a mother, is bewildered at the news. In the midst of mixed feelings and a huge moral dilemma, it’s hard to say if she will be able to love both children equally and maintain her family relationships in the same way.
Though the base premise is exactly same, the Hindi film and the Brazilian limited series are very different in their treatment. While ‘Bad Newz’ deals with the issue in a comic, funny and heartwarming manner; ‘Desparate Lies’ is a dark emotional themed drama dealing with secrets, turmoils, melodrama and more.
For those who don’t know, ‘Good Newwz’ (2019) had its premise copied by a 2023 Danish film ‘Maybe Baby’ that is also on Netflix and its sequel ’Maybe Baby 2’ is set to come out in 2024 on Netflix.
