BAFTA’s Recent Initiatives Might Do Good To The Industry

Cinema and movies have always been a form of entertainment, but with the progressing age, it is turning into a global art form that requires a certain responsibility. In recent times, the Oscars tweaked their entire awards system, and BAFTA didn’t want to suffer from FOMO.

In terms of BAFTA’s efforts, they are making changes that might impact the industry, and this time, it’s for the better.

In terms of lifestyle, inflation has become one of the biggest problems, and if you don’t emerge as a big star, life becomes difficult. So, for those who are currently part of the industry and for a group of people planning to join it, the British Academy has launched a set of initiatives.

These new steps and initiatives will significantly improve the lives of those who need it.

As of Monday, around 77 individuals became part of this initiative and were given approximately €227,000 (around 20 crores) as BAFTA’s nurseries and scholarships. The fund will be directed towards providing them with specific equipment and offering specific lessons and training courses.

BAFTA is also creating an online resource, set to be released this year, aimed at raising awareness of class-related issues in the entertainment industry. It will include interviews with figures like Danny Brocklehurst, Shane Meadows, and Jack O’Connell, who will share their experiences with financial and social barriers.

The resource will cover themes such as authentic representation, code-switching, and ideas for improving human resources and hiring practices. The goal is to make the industry more inclusive and equitable.

In addition, BAFTA will now publish the annual socio-economic report of its members. As of this month, 19% of its 12,000 members represent a lower socio-economic background, which speaks volumes about the inclusive strategy.

A film surely shouldn’t be measured by parameters like socio-economic backgrounds or sexuality, and no categories should be formed. However, the inclusion or the intention of inclusion will not only make cinema reach a more widespread audience, but it will also inspire many new faces. At the end of the day, art is for everyone.
