One of the most recently speculated remakes that hogged the headlines was that of Baiju Bawra’s, the 1952 release featuring Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari, to be helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Names like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan were reportedly considered too. Though we’re yet to know the status of the film, we wish the news is true.
With a story that blends a historical backdrop of the Akbar regime with the folklore of Baiju Bawra, the Kamal Amrohi directorial continues to be one of the most revered and commercially successful films to have come out of Bollywood. The film is about how a young musician Baiju who challenges the authority of Tansen and his musical ability, in a bid to avenge his father’s death.
Baiju Bawra is a rare musical film in Bollywood that’s completely reliant on Hindustani music for its legendary soundtrack. For Mohammed Rafi, the film was a game-changer and so for its composer Naushad, who also went onto composing for Mughal-E-Azam. The romance between the lead pair Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumar was equally memorable.
With Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s penchant for films set amid a historical backdrop, his eye for opulence, refined understanding of music, the Baiju Bawra reboot would be nothing short of a jewel. Though matching the original would be a tough bargain, we’re sure the auteur would do justice to the enriching tale of love and music. Another worthy name who could helm this project is, of course, Ashutosh Gowariker, who has already recreated the world during Akbar’s rule in his magnum opus Jodha Akbar.
Baiju Bawra can be watched on Shemaroo Me.
