The on-screen Ken, Ryan Gosling, knows nothing about Barbie 2. However, he has some intriguing ideas about what version of Ken he would like to portray in the sequel. Being a part of the sensational ‘Barbenheimer’ event, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie turned out to be a phenomenal success. The film collected over $1.4 billion globally and earned a ‘fresh’ rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 480 reviews.
Barbie shows Gosling as Ken, who surprisingly becomes a villain after learning about patriarchy in the real world. He completely changes the ‘Barbie land’ in the absence of Margot Robbie’s titular character, turning it into a male-dominated world.
In his recent interview with CBR, Ryan Gosling gave a disappointing update about Barbie 2. This is what he said:
“Oh, I’m not going anywhere near that [Barbie’s sequel]. We really know nothing. Can it be a Husky Ken? Can I play Husky Ken, like Sandwich Ken? Can I play that Ken next time?”
Many people are surprised that Warner Bros has not yet planned Barbie 2, considering the sensational performance (both critical and financial) of the first entry. Made on a budget of $150 million, the Ryan Gosling starrer “reached a Barbillion”, just repeating what WB said about the film when it crossed the $1 billion mark globally.
We can point out some reasons that must be stopping Warner Bros from making Barbie 2. One of them is the film’s climax. In the end, we see Robbie’s “Stereotypical Barbie” becoming a human and later dropping a visit to a gynaecologist for the first time. She even changed her name to Barbara Handler. This scenario must be causing problems for the studio in terms of coming up with an effective storyline for the rumoured sequel. It will be interesting to see how Robbie’s character becomes a part of the Barbie land again if WB officially announces the sequel in future.
We should not also ignore the odds of the cast members’ scheduling conflicts affecting Barbie 2’s production. Margot Robbie has not yet accepted an acting role after Barbie. On the other hand, Ryan Gosling will dedicate nearly the first half of 2024 towards the promotion of David Leitch’s The Fall Guy. America Ferrera will soon commence working on Pixar’s Elio. She will voice Major Olga Solis, the titular character’s mother, in the film. In addition, Kate McKinnon is busy filming Andrew Stanton’s In the Blink of an Eye, an upcoming sci-fi flick from Searchlight Pictures. Stay tuned for more updates.
