British series ‘Ten Pound Poms’ premiered on BBC One in the UK and Stan in Australia on 14 May 2023. The 6-part series received above average views on TV. It also garnered good reviews from critics and audiences, who appreciated the premise and performances of the lead cast in the series.
‘Ten Pound Poms‘ is now gearing up to release on Indian OTT, courtesy streaming platform, SonyLIV. All episodes of the series premiere on SonyLIV on 8th September, 2023, which is this Friday.
The historical drama series is based on the true-life scenario in post-war Britain, when Britons were lured into migrating to Australia, with the promise of a better, more prosperous life in that country. The catch was that Britons would have to pay a mere £10 or ten pounds as immigration and travelling charges for their migration to Australia. The migrating Britons thus came to be known as Ten Pound Poms – the Poms being the slang term for Britishers prevalent in Australia.
Reportedly, more than one million Britons got lured by the promises and cheap ten-pound cost, and migrated to Australia, in order to escape their dreary lives in post World War II Britain. Once they reached Australia, however, they realised that things were not as they had expected. Living quarters were abominable, and jobs were scarce.
The series ‘Ten Pound Poms’ is based on reality. However, its plot and protagonists are fictional. The story follows a group of Britons departing post-war Britain in 1956 for Australia, having been promised a better house, better job prospects and a better quality of life for just £10. The group soon learn life in Australia is not as promised. Struggling with their new identity as immigrants, the series follows their triumphs and pitfalls as they adapt to a new life in a new country far from Britain and familiarity.
The series is created by Danny Brocklehurst for BBC One and Stan. ‘Ten Pound Poms’ stars Michelle Keegan, Faye Marsay, Warren Brown, Stephen Curry, David Field, among others, in pivotal roles.
