After almost two decades of absence, The “Eco-Challenge: Expedition Race” had returned last year. It had been documented into a 10 episode web-series called “World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji”, which as the name suggests, was set in Fiji. The docuseries of the 11 day expedition race hosted by “Man vs. Wild”’s Bear Grylls has started streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The 671 km endurance challenge attracted 66 teams, of 4 members each, from 30 countries, to Fiji. Out of these teams, Team ‘Khukuri Warriors’ from Dehradun, was the first Indian team and South Asian team to participate in the show since it’s origin in 1995. The team was led by Tashi and Nungshi Malik, the first female twins to climb Mt. Everest and affectionately got named the ‘Everest Twins’. Joining them is skiing and rafting expert Parveen Singh Rangar and their father Col Virendra Singh Malik (TAC) a former colonel in the Indian Army.
Tashi and Nungshi Malik trained at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in 2010. Three years later they scaled Mount Everest. In December 2014, at 23 years of age, they became the first female siblings and twins to climb the Seven Summits (the highest mountain peaks in the seven continents). On July 15th 2015, they completed the Three Pole Challenge (Reaching North pole, South pole and Everest) and Explorers Grand Slam (Covering the Seven Summits with the North and South Pole) making them the first Indians and South Asians to do so.
They have now taken on this new challenge, where teams will have to go through some of the toughest, rugged and most dangerous terrains ranging from steep mountains and dense tropical forest to the treacherous rivers and a vast ocean. The host Bear Grylls says this 31-checkpoint expedition course is designed to test them physically, mentally and emotionally.
“World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji” started streaming on Amazon Prime Video on 14th August 2020.
