The director of the recently released, much anticipated film ‘Rebecca’, Ben Wheatley, has been handed the reigns for the upcoming sequel to the 2018 commercial hit, ‘The Meg’. The first film was based on the 1997 book ‘Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror’ which was written by Steve Alten. The first film was directed by the ‘National Treasure’ director, Jon Turteltaub.
Titled ‘Meg 2: The Trench’, the sequel is undergoing pre-production. The Warner Bros. film has a draft of a script prepared by Jon, Erich Hoeber and Dean Georgaris. The science fiction action film will be based on the 1999 book ‘The Trench’ (also known as ‘The Trench: Meg 2’), which was also written by Steve Alten. The first film featured the prehistoric shark, the Megalodon. If the film follows the book, we are expecting to see another prehistoric monster on the big screen – the Kronosaurus.
Warner Bros. is said to be expecting Jason Stathom to return for this sequel, to portray the U.S. Navy diver Jonas Taylor. The book has the main character (Jonas Taylor) returning so we are certainly expecting the action star to return for the subsequent continuation film as well.
The first film, ‘The Meg’ follows deep-sea diver Jonas Taylor, who is part of an expedition team exploring the deepest point on earth, The Mariana Trench. While searching for a group of lost crewmates, the group encounter a prehistoric predator that was supposed to have been extinct over two million years ago – The Megalodon.
‘The Meg’ is currently streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
