‘Berlin’ On Zee5: Not Your Middle-Of-The-Road Spy Thriller!

'Berlin' On Zee5 Not Your Middle-Of-The-Road Spy Thriller!

If there’s a genre that piques the interest of audiences across all demographics and geographical boundaries, it’s a good bone-chilling-leave-you-at-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller. Recently, it seems as though Zee5 subscribers were recently exposed to one such story.

Having premiered at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles in 2023, ‘Berlin’, an Atul Sabharwal directorial stars Aparshakti Khurana, Ishwak Singh, Rahul Bose, Anupriya Goenka, and Kabir Bedi in the leading roles. The film follows a deaf-mute young man, who is accused and arrested for being a spy. As a sign language expert is brought in, the line between guilt and innocence becomes increasingly blurry.

Aparshakti Khurana, still riding the high of the success of ‘Stree 2’, has been brought into the spotlight with ‘Berlin’ once again. More than the plot, the strong, nuanced and versatile performances from the actors are being hailed. The tense espionage thriller, though a gripping watch, is a subversive take on the political volatility of its timeline.

Despite that, the film accomplishes a rare milestone: there seems to be no clear distinction between the good and the bad, the hero and the villain. Rather, it is the original tale of morally-grey characters who find themselves entrapped in perilous situations.
