Amar Kaushik’s upcoming comedy horror movie ‘Bhediya’ is all set to release in theatres on 25th November in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu languages. The makers had recently unveiled several interesting character posters featuring the film’s lead actors Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. They are essaying the roles of Bhaskar Upadhyay and Dr. Anika Sharma, respectively. After ‘Stree’ (2018) and ‘Roohi’ (2021), ‘Bhediya’ is the third instalment from producer Dinesh Vijan’s horror-comedy universe. And earlier today, the makers have unveiled the official trailer of ‘Bhediya’ (attached below).
‘Bhediya’ trailer starts off with the protagonist Bhaskar (Varun Dhawan) getting bitten by a wolf. The wolf-bite results in heightened senses and an increased strength and agility for Bhaskar. And then, he gradually transforms into a wolf during the night, much to the chagrin of his ragtag bunch of friends, who provide comic relief to the goings-on. And thus begins his search for a possible cure for his condition. The trailer also shows a fleeting glimpse of the werewolf transformation scene aka Lycanthropy. The visual effects are nice and so is the cinematography (credit also goes to Arunachal Pradesh’s scenic backdrop).
‘Bhediya’ has been directed by Amar Kaushik, whose last two directorial feature film projects ‘Stree’ and ‘Bala’ had both struck the right chords with the audiences and were praised by critics. So, that should be another big reason to be excited about watching ‘Bhediya’. Plus, ‘Bhediya’ has been penned by Niren Bhatt, whose earlier works include the ‘Inside Edge’ series, ‘Bala’, and the National Award-winning film ‘Ventilator’.
It would be interesting to see if ‘Bhediya’ can do what no other Indian film in the past has been able to achieve before. That is, to give the Indian audiences a taste of an authentic werewolf horror comedy movie, which can be comparable to its Hollywood counterparts like ‘American Werewolf in London’ and Michael J. Fox’s ‘Teen Wolf’.
As far as werewolf-themed Indian films are concerned, the closest and perhaps the only film that comes within the ambit of the proper horror-werewolf genre was Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Junoon’ starring Rahul Roy and Pooja Bhatt. Although the wolf was replaced by a tiger for some reason despite being heavily inspired by ‘American Werewolf in London’.
Coming back to ‘Bhediya’, besides Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, the film also features talented performers Deepak Dobriyal and Abhishek Banerjee in important roles. After ‘Bhediya’, Varun Dhawan will also be seen in Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Bawaal’. While Kriti Sanon’s forthcoming acting projects include ‘Adipurush’ co-starring Prabhas and Vikas Bahl’s action flick ‘Ganpath’ co-starring Tiger Shroff, amongst others.
