Ajay Devgn has reportedly said that his team plans to create a cinematic universe with his next theatrical ‘Bholaa‘ like Lokesh Kanagaraj has made with ‘Kaithi’ and ‘Vikram’. ‘Vikram’ and ‘Kaithi’ are going to have sequels soon, and there will be more films added to this universe. Bholaa is the official remake of the 2019 Tamil hit ‘Kaithi’ that tells the story of an ex-convict who wants to meet his daughter for the first time but is caught in a confrontation of the police with a drug mafia. Ajay Devgn and Tabu will be playing the lead roles in the remake that is slated to release in 2023.
There are a few cinematic universes in the pipeline in Bollywood. Yash Raj Films’ spy universe will most probably introduce Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, Salman Khan’s Tiger and Hrithik Roshan’s Kabir together. There are already talks about Salman having a cameo in Shahrukh’s Pathaan.
Rohit Shetty has already created a cop universe with back-to-back hit films on police officers. Ajay Devgn’s Bajirao Singham, Ranvir Singh’s Simmba and Akshay Kumar’s Suryavanshi have already come together in support of each other in the films. Now Siddharth Malhotra is in talks to join this cop universe too.
In the Kannada film industry, Prashanth Neel might be creating another universe with films like K.G.F and others. His upcoming movie ‘Salaar’ may be one part of the big jigsaw.
Whatever it might be, remaking all the movies of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s universe might not be a very good idea after all. Remakes with even good stories and performances are constantly doing bad in the box office. Vikram and such movies may not be accepted well if they are remade. There is too much fan emotion related to these movies and Kamal Hassan is absolutely irreplaceable. Maybe changing the stories a bit instead of blandly copying can help. Having a different approach is absolutely necessary in such an ambitious and risky project.
