The 2022 Bengali movie ‘Bhotbhoti’, which gathered much praise from critics and audiences at the time of its theatrical release, is soon going to be available online. But it will not stream on any OTT platform. The director and the producers have decided to stream the movie on YouTube itself.
The reason behind this decision can be rejection by OTT giants for it is indeed a very experimental project. Very recently Raj B. Shetty’s Kannada webseries ‘Ekam’ was denied a platform and the makers were compelled to create one of their own. The 2013 movie ‘Ship Of Theseus’ that has acquired a somewhat cult status now also found its refuge in YouTube. While the indifference of the platforms is shocking, YouTube will hopefully provide a larger audience for the film.
The movie tells the story of a boy who was raised by his grandmother who used to tell him stories of mermaids. When he grew up and his grandmother was no more, he still kept on believing that there are mermaids under the water. He goes to extreme lengths to find the mermaids. This is not just a children’s fantasy film. This is a drama that has a strong socio-political and ecological message. The director shows the world on the brink of a dystopia and shows the valid reasons for it.
There are some loopholes in the movie but they can easily be overlooked for the awesome visuals and storytelling. If you have not watched the movie yet, it is soon going to be available for free. Enjoy ‘Bhotbhoti’ on YouTube with your friends and family.
